UVThera is both a
professional endeavour —
and a deeply personal one.
"Having lived with vitiligo myself, I understand the uncertainties that come with treatment — the patience it demands, the need for consistency, and the difficulty of knowing whether the effort is making a difference."
That understanding has been central to our journey with UVThera. When we set out to build this device, we weren't starting from a technology brief or a market gap analysis. We were starting from a question that I had asked myself as a patient for years: why is it so hard to know if your treatment is actually working?
Most UV phototherapy devices give you a timer. They count down seconds. What they cannot tell you is how much ultraviolet energy has actually reached your skin — because that number changes as the lamp ages, as the device warms up, as the session varies. A timer gives you the illusion of precision. It does not give you precision.
We wanted to make phototherapy smarter, safer and more connected — not just a device, but a system that can be customised to each patient and provide meaningful, trackable data.
UVThera enables patients to monitor their therapy and progress in real terms — doses measured in mJ/cm², not minutes. Session logs that travel with them. Repigmentation photos that show what the mirror misses. And on the other side of that data, dermatologists with something they have rarely had for home phototherapy: quantifiable information to better understand treatment and make truly informed decisions between clinic visits.
For me, that last part is not abstract. I know what it feels like to sit in a consultation room and try to describe, in words, whether the white patch on my arm looks different from six weeks ago. I know the uncertainty of that conversation — for the patient and for the clinician. UVThera is our attempt to replace that uncertainty with evidence.
I know what it means to live with vitiligo. And I believe that better technology, thoughtful design, and good clinical practice can make the journey towards better outcomes a little easier — not just for me, but for the people who deserve the same standard of care I was fortunate enough to find.
